Future State Visioning Workshop Participation
The Township of McNab/Braeside is developing a Sustainable Waste Management Strategy (SWMS) that will guide waste management programs and services over the next 10 to 20 years, focused on environmental sustainability, recovering valuable resources, and making current waste infrastructure last longer.
Why Complete a Sustainable Waste Management Strategy (SWMS)?
The Township’s last strategy was completed in 2011. Since that time, there have been changes in the Township and in waste management in Ontario. Across Ontario, forward-thinking jurisdictions use these strategies as a compass to guide their waste management system, typically updating them every 10 to 25 years. The SWMS is a structured process which reviews the current state of the waste management system, identifies opportunities for improvement, and develops an implementation plan to support actions that advance the Township towards its long-term goals.
Sustainable Waste Management Strategy Goals:
- Develop a long-term vision for sustainable waste management in the Township of McNab/Braeside.
- Identify and recommend actions to reduce waste generation, increase waste diversion, limit CO2 emissions, and improve overall waste system performance.
- Optimize the efficiency and extend the life of current waste management infrastructure (e.g., landfill space, equipment).
- Contribute to the Township’s environmental sustainability objectives and, where applicable, greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
- Engage with the community and stakeholders to ensure the strategy reflects local needs and priorities.
The Project Phases:
We are currently in Phase 2, where we define the Township’s future vision.
- Phase 1: Current State Assessment
- Phase 2: Future State Visioning and Options Development (Current Phase)
- Phase 3: Strategy Development and Implementation Plan
- Phase 4: Reporting
